The Collections: Costello Tagliapietra FW11

11 Apr

Great dresses are a given at any Costello Tagliapietra show, so it was no surprise that the Fall 2011 collection featured many chic frocks that all carried the signature fluid elegance that we’ve come to expect from the Brooklyn-based duo. The dresses run the gamut of lengths, with the ankle-grazing jersey looks destined to become go-to pieces when cooler temps return.  But what was most newsworthy about this collection was the ways that earth-friendly processes were expertly woven throughout the lineup. Falling in line with the season’s overt re-embrace of fur, Costello Tagliapietra presented several pieces accented with Alpaca fur, but have taken care to only use alpacas that did not live beyond their first year and died of natural causes. The designers also continued their use of the AirDye technique, a process that dyes fabrics without the use of water. This process was used throughout the collection, resulting in super-saturated colors that found its way onto dresses, tops and, most interestingly, pants, where a stripe-sequin combination recalled a late 70’s glam that would have been right at home at Studio 54.
