The Collections: Stephen Burrows FW11

20 Apr

The name Stephen Burrows immediately brings to mind New York City in the 70’s, legendary models Pat Cleveland and Alva Chinn and slinky, brightly-colored jersey dresses. For his fall 2011 collection, Burrows has stayed true to his predilection for body-con dresses and has injected some print clashing into the mix: stripes are set against jacquards and an ikat print on a long-sleeved sheath dress just might be one of the strongest dresses of the season. One of the most compelling elements about Burrows’ collections over the years has been his way of presenting directional ideas in a deceptively simple manner, such as in a cream-colored mini-dress that flares at the lower hip in a whimsical play on volume. Not a place where most women would normally want to bring attention to, but he makes it work and his more forward-thinking followers would certainly be intrigued enough to take this dress out for a spin.
