Happy Birthday Audrey!

4 May

There’s probably nothing that can be written about Audrey Hepburn as a fashion icon that you don’t already know, but nonetheless, in an age where people with no discernable talent or intellectual depth are constantly trending, it’s important to take a second and remember the divine vision that was  Audrey. Hepburn, who died in 1993 and would have been 82 years old today, is one of those actresses, much like Tilda Swinton or Cate Blanchett, through whom the language of fashion is interpreted at the highest possible level. Much has been made of Hepburn’s collaborations with Hubert de Givenchy, but my favorite Audrey “look” is the ultra-modern Audrey, best illustrated by the Paco Rabanne pieces that she wears throughout the film “Two for the Road” co-starring Albert Finney. Her hair and skirts are chopped short, the line of her clothes is clean and futuristic, and, more compelling, her face shows signs of the disappointment of her failing marriage to Mel Ferrer and the pain of two miscarriages. The ingenue from “Roman Holiday” and “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” is gone and in its place is a real woman who weathered many peaks and valleys in her life. Her career and her later work with UNICEF in Africa are testament to the type of woman that we should all hope to be, regardless of race or economic strata.
