The Industry: Hyeres Festival 2011

10 May

As if there would need to be any further reason to venture to the South of France in the spring- fashion and photography lovers have the Hyeres Festival as another must-see event to add to the itinerary. The festival began on April 29th and ended May 2nd (the exhibition of the fashion pieces and photography runs through May 29th). Conceived as a showcase for young fashion and photography talent, Hyeres selects 10 fashion designers and 10 photographers to compete for a monetary prize. But perhaps more important to the designers than the prize money, is the opportunity to have their work seen by some of the most influential eyes in the fashion industry. This year, the panel was headed up by Raf Simons and the impressive list of judges included  fashion journalists Tim Blanks and Cathy Horyn, designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler and Christopher Kane. No American designers made the final cut, but a survey of the work of the 10 finalists yields some interesting ideas, as most presentations featuring young designers manage to do. The winner of the fashion competition was an eccentric Swiss designer named Emilie Meldem, who once interned with Viktor and Rolf.
