Jean-Paul Gaultier Exhibit Opens in Montreal

20 Jun

Without a doubt, Jean-Paul Gaultier is one of the reasons why we will always, always love fashion. Never one to suffer for his art, Gaultier has done the opposite, injecting an industry that often takes itself far too seriously with a dose of frivolity and cheekiness that never fails to amuse even the most jaded of stylephile. But underneath all of the fun, is the work of a true master. To honor his work, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts has just launched an exhibit of Gaultier’s most iconic pieces. Titled “The Fashion World of Jean-Paul Gaultier: From Sidewalk to the Catwalk”, the exhibition features 120 Couture and Ready-to-Wear looks designed by Gaultier, as well as sketches and videos from 1976-2010. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Gaultier show if there wasn’t something at least a little unsettling- the mannequins in the exhibit have faces that “come to life”, with friends of the designer like musician Melissa Auf de Maur lending their faces to the show.  Yes, a tad bit creepy…  As if we needed another reason to visit Montreal, we need to make room in our summer travel schedule for this. The show is on display through October 2 and then travels to Dallas, opening there on November 13.
