The Market: Mikuti Jewelry

19 Jul

The Perfect Stack Bracelets, $65,

As we wait patiently for the economy to recalibrate itself, we sense that part of the “New Normal” will involve supporting clothing and accessories companies that have a mission beyond that of boosting their bottom line. That’s why we were thrilled when we came across Mikuti over the weekend. Meaning “dried leaf” in Kiswahili, Mikuti is a jewelry label that collaborates with artisians, workshops and individuals in Tanzania to  help foster economic development. The pieces in the collection are made from earth-friendly materials such as banana bark, recycled aluminum and locally produced textiles.  We love the raw,  bohemian slant of Mikuti, and so does designer Mara Hoffman, who used Mikuti pieces when she presented her new swimwear collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim in Miami last week.
