Model Moment: Alek Wek

Alek Wek's Autobiography, "Alek", Published in 2007

When we think of supermodel Alek Wek, the first thing that immediately comes to mind is her gorgeous, high-wattage smile. She branded her own unique type of beauty and everything about the way she looks is pitch-perfect: her amazing skin, expressive eyes and the graceful carriage worthy of a principal dancer. She, along with her family, fled her homeland of Sudan during the civil war in 1985. They landed in London, where Wek was discovered in in 1995. Wek became the first African model to cover Elle magazine in 1997, and has walked the runway for just about every major designer. If you haven’t read her aubiography, Alek, you should.

Below is an interview Wek did with Tavis Smiley in which she relays the story of her discovery in London. She is the reason that people are obessed with hearing models talk- her inner beauty just spills out of her and we could listen to her accent all day long.

I love her because she is not a standard beauty, she has that something that no one else has 🙂
