Model Moment: Beverly Peele

19 Aug

If you were fans of Elle and Mademoiselle magazines in the late 1980’s and 1990’s, you were no doubt as obsessed as we were with supermodel Beverly Peele. She had the most amazing cheekbones and a body that seemed crafted specfically for Haute Couture.  Peele started modeling in the late 1980’s and was the first black model to cover Mademoiselle in 1989 at the age of 14.  There are reports of her having hit the runways of Paris at the age of 12, but whether that actually happened or not, she is a legend among true stylephiles. The zenith of her career was in the 1990’s, when she appeared in campaigns for Donna Karan,Versace and Ralph Lauren, among others. In 1993, she was named one of People Magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful People in the World.  Peele’s career took a downturn after the birth of her daughter, and she fell on hard times, a period of her life that she has been courageous in speaking publicly about, as a cautionary tale to young girls about the pitfalls of the modeling world. But she will always be the Divine Miss Peele to us- here are a few of our favorite images from her career.

This post is bringing back so many memories. As a teen I worked at Food Emporium and lo and behold, who was grocery shopping one day? Ms. Peele and her daughter Cairo. She was just as sweet and cordial. And Cairo was a little toddler at the time and just as chubby and cute as can be. I was thoroughly starstruck to say the least and she totally didn’t disappoint. I totally miss her! She was one of the best and just so exotic…extraordinarily abd unmistakeably beautiful. It’s a shame that her career never got back on track because she was one of the hottest Black models in the game. I’d like to see what Cairo looks like now and wonder if she’d follow in her mom’s footsteps? I’d like to think that the modeling industry has changed drastically since her day for the better.

Wow! What a cool story! She was so amazing on the runway and it was hard to take your eyes off her in print editorials. We would really love to see her back on the scene somehow, that’s for sure! Thanks for reading! xx
