The Collections: Sally LaPointe SS12

12 Sep

Since debuting her label during the SS11 collections last September, Sally LaPointe has deftly positioned herself as a designer to keep a keen eye on. Her first two collections had a distinct otherworldly, futuristic vibe that was visually arresting. For spring 2012, LaPointe maintains her space-age femme fatale aesthetic, but this time she has created a collection that is decidedly more accessible. Working with a “haunted romanticism” theme,  LaPointe again manipulates the planes of the body by exaggerating the horizontals of the upper body with wide shoulders and the hips with peplums, but she grounds these experiments with floaty wide-leg trousers and maxi skirts.  Known for her uniquely gorgeous hand-painted prints, LaPointe offers an ethereal graphic that manages to look both organic and techy at the same time.  The muted palette cements the somber, romantic story that the designer wanted to tell. Fans of LaPointe’s hard-edge visuals will find much to like with this collection, but a legion of new followers will also take notice, as a spot-on version of post-modern pretty has just been revealed. Here, a few looks from the collection.
