The Collections: Mimi Plange SS12

13 Sep

” I was thinking of Namibia. I wanted to take the Eastern floral of spring, the traditional dress of the Himba, the Victorian dress of the Herero and blend them together into something modern, soft and strong”. That’s how designer Mimi Plange describes the direction of her spring 2012 collection. Each of those three ideas were thoughtfully explored in a lineup that included unapologetically feminine dresses and skirts whose forward-thinking shapes were an intelligent contrast to the classic floral motif.  It’s the little exercises in geometry- the silk faille panels on the shoulders of a sheath dress or the extended bodice of a caftan, that push this collection past just another group of spring frocks. The accessories that were presented are also worth noting- Plange collaborated with Manolo Blahnik on two shoe looks for spring, a tasseled sandal and an open-toe beaded bootie. A lambskin leather belt with a jeweled brooch is a contender for one of spring’s covet-worthy extras. Select looks from the collection are below.
