The Collections: Ann-Sofie Back Atelje SS12

19 Sep

Ann-Sofie Back occupies an interesting space in fashion- for those who are inclined to sartorial experimentation, her collections serve as a safe on-ramp of sorts on the way to the avant garde. There’s definitely something left-of-center happening, but it’s not so caught up with itself that it is rendered inaccessible. For her SS12 Atelje collection, Back continues along this path and wipes the slate clean, offering a limited palette of cream, black and slate, which gives off an initial vibe of severity. The more strident outlines are softened, sometimes with organza- the particularly gorgeous examples being as an overlay atop a skirt and as an off-the-shoulder paneled blouse.  The drop-waist, which has been spotted on more than a few runways this season, is also present here, including on a fluid coral maxidress, one of the two moments of color in the collection. These looks are sure to intrigue those with a highly developed eye for construction and a taste for thoughtful manipulations of the silhouette. Select looks from the collection are below.
