The Collections: Stephen Burrows SS12

19 Sep

Certain seasons and certain designers seem to have a distinct synergy that reveals itself again and again. There’s something about Stephen Burrows and spring/summer that just works- the inherent exuberance of Burrows’ collections fits warmer weather like a glove. For spring 2012, Burrows offers his own take on no-nonsense American sportswear, primarily in the form of easy dresses and flirty skirts. The ease of movement is an important point here, as there is a lot to be said for designers who actually remember the fact that clothes actually have to be worn and lived in (Bonnie Cashin and Claire McCardell have cast a long shadow in favor of freeing women from impractical fashion). Burrows provides this in spades while still injecting sex appeal with a plunging neckline on a shirtdress or a snakeskin print on a slinky sheath. The myriad of stripes is just flat out fun and a hyper-graphic departure from the typical spring floral print. Select looks from the collection are below.
