The Market: Assouline Vintage Crate Collection

28 Oct

We spend a lot of real estate at The Black Market talking about and crushing on books. And just like a girl can never have too many shoes or bags, we also believe that there is just no such thing as too many books. It’s Halloween season, which means that in a few more days, you can officially start drafting your holiday wish list, and we think that this will be at the top. We adore Assouline Publishing for their endless inventory of beautiful books about fashion, culture and art, and this collection might have topped anything they have ever done. Called the Assouline Vintage Crate Collection, a wooden box that is meant to resemble a wine crate houses 20 titles from Assouline’s Fashion Memoire collection. Books on Jean Paul Gautier, Balenciaga, The Kennedys and Marie-Antoinette are included. The collection is $500, so make sure to request this from someone that you have not been the least bit naughty to this year. We are kind of freaking out about this. Luella’s Guide to English Style

31 Aug

We don’t want to dredge up the terrible memories of when you first heard that Luella Bartley was shuttering her label- it took us way too long to recover from that horror. But we now have an idea of some of what she has been doing since then- she has a new book about to hit the shelves! Called Luella’s Guide to English Style, her book aims to encapsulate all that makes our English sisters cooler than us. Exploring the way that British fashion always seems to be equal parts scruffy street-style and classic polish, we are reminded of Bartley’s days as an editor at UK Vogue  and we can’t wait to get our hands on the full book. Luella’s Guide to English Style will be released September 29th.

Christian Lacroix and the Tale of Sleeping Beauty

22 Aug

Christian Lacroix and the Tale of Sleeping Beauty by Camilla Morton, $22, net-a-porter.com

One of the hardest people to buy gifts for are fellow stylephiles. They have a pitch-perfect eye for form and function and have no patience for the unsightly and banal. Over the weekend, we came across a gorgeous little book that would make an interesting gift for any fashion lover, Christian Lacroix and the Tale of Sleeping Beauty. Written by Camilla Morton and lavishly illustrated by Christian Lacroix (yes, THAT Christian Lacroix), this is a re-telling of the classic tale of Sleeping Beauty with Lacroix himself in place as the hero of the story. We love the illustration of the prince that looks just like Lacroix.

Parisian Chic

28 Apr

Definitely on the must-read list for the upcoming lazy days of summer…We love Ines’ easy, modern classic style and wonder why she didn’t do this book sooner. One tip we expect to see in the book: take off one accessory/piece of jewelry before leaving the house- you will never see an over-accessorized Parisan woman.

Michelle Obama:Everyday Icon

10 Apr

Just in time for summertime reading, comes a new book about the easy, elegant and fashion-forward style of First Lady Michelle Obama. Everyday Icon: Michelle Obama and the Power of Style, written by veteran fashion insider Kate Betts, outlines Mrs. Obama’s influence on both the fashion industry and the style of the average woman. Few people have managed to integrate cool, under-the-radar labels into her busy lifestyle as seamlessly as Mrs. O.
