If you are like us, there are large piles of old fashion magazines occupying much space in your apartment. One of the reasons that we can’t bear to part with magazines that are (sometimes) decades old is the ads. Beyond being able to see models-of-the-moment in their prime, we love to look back at labels that are no longer on the scene (Claude Montana), or have been taken over by new designers (Thierry Mugler). Here, a few vintage ads that we have come across lately. Our favorites being the DVF ad with both Iman and Gia(!!!) and the CK One image featuring the lovely model-turned designer Lois Samuels (that’s her on the far left).
Isaac Mizrahi is one of those larger-than-life fashion personalities that we are endlessly enamored with. The future of his signature collection appears to be up in the air yet again, but we wanted to take an affectionate look back at the film Unzipped. Following the creative process behind his 1994 FW collection, the film is directed by Mizrahi’s former flame Douglas Keeve. Mizrahi is working with a “Nanook of the North” theme for his collection, only to find out through the grapevine that Jean-Paul Gaultier is also producing an eskimo-inspired line. There’s plenty of drama (which we, of course, love) and most importantly, there are SUPERMODELS. Real, live supers who need only be addressed by one name: Cindy, Naomi, Linda, Christy and Kate. We love how a couple of the models come off as kind of bitchy and clearly annoyed with the cameras- we’ll let you guess which ones.. Anyone who has even a passing interest in fashion and the fashion industry has this movie in their DVD rotation and no doubt pulls it out when nostalgia for 90’s fashion strikes.
From the “What the??” files comes this, the Pret-a-porTEA tea bag set. Yes, if you are like us, and just can’t get enough fashion, you can have 5 fashion icons nestled into your tea cup. Jean-Paul Gaultier, Naomi Campbell, Donatella Versace, Claudia Schiffer and Karl Lagerfeld are all in tea bag form, Assam black tea, to be specific. Fred Flare is always good for whimsical accessories and a good laugh, but even we were taken a bit off guard by this. But before you think it’s all fun and games, partial proceeds from the sales of the Pret-a-porTEA set go to Betharien Kinderdoerfer, a German charity that aids disabled children. The set is yet to be released, but you can add your name to the wait list at www.fredflare.com.
One of our favorite times of the year is when the images from the fall campaigns start trickling out. Here is Naomi Campbell for the Givenchy FW11 campaign. Yes, she has had her “issues”, but we still kind of want to be her when we grow up and would really, really love it if she (or any black model), found their way to a September issue cover of a major fashion magazine this year…
The queen of the runway, Naomi Campbell, is the newest celeb/model to launch her very own fragrance. It’s called Wild Pearl and it is a reflection of all things feminine, strong and sensual. The fragrance is a fruity floral that goes on light and dries down to a sensuously sweet finish. The top notes include; Fresh Watermelon, Juicy Vineyard Peach and Delicate Apple Blossom. The middle notes consists of; Rare White Violet, Elegant Jasmine and Precious Pink Pepper. The base notes are; Pearlescent Musk, Authentic Cedar Wood and Exotic Vanilla. The collection includes the Eau De Toilette, Eau De Parfum, Body Cleanser, Body Lotion and Deodarant.
