Inspired By: Vintage Fashion Ads

26 Jan

If you are like us, there are large piles of old fashion magazines occupying much space in your apartment. One of the reasons that we can’t bear to part with magazines that are (sometimes) decades old is the ads. Beyond being able to see models-of-the-moment in their prime, we love to look back at labels that are no longer on the scene (Claude Montana), or have been taken over by new designers (Thierry Mugler). Here, a few vintage ads that we have come across lately. Our favorites being the DVF ad with both Iman and Gia(!!!) and the CK One image featuring the lovely model-turned designer Lois Samuels (that’s her on the far left).

Yves Saint Laurent Exhibit/Denver Art Museum

17 Jan

While a lot of the talk about Denver as of late has been about a certain perilously close-to-being-overexposed quarterback, we are far more interested in a new exhibit opening at the city’s art museum. Titled “Yves Saint Laurent: A Retrospective”, this presentation spans 40 years of the legendary designer’s career and explores his influence on the history of fashion. The Denver Art Museum is the only US stop for this exhibit, which features 200 couture pieces (three looks from the exhibit are shown here) as well as photos, films and sketches. Tickets go on sale to the public on January 20. “Yves Saint Laurent: A Retrospective” opens March 25  and closes July 8, 2012. Get more info here.

Beauty Addictions….YSL Rouge Pur Couture Vernis À Lèvres Glossy Stain

12 Jan

YSL, Pur Couture Vernis a Levres Glossy Stain, $32, http://www.sephora.com

It’s part lip gloss and part lip stain and it’s 100% glamorous. We can’t get enough of the new YSL Pur Couture Glossy Stains. We are all about products that multi-task especially as our lives become more hectic and busy; we want our products to do double duty too. In the past, regular lip glosses were fun to wear but became a bit of a chore as you always had to reapply every 20 minutes or less if you were eating, drinking, talking or anything else that involved the use of your lips. We may not have our hands or lips on these gloss/stains yet but we are definitely putting them on our must-have list for spring and so should you!

Editor’s Picks: Our Favorite Sexy Secretary Blouses

Favorite Sexy Secretary Blouses
A recent Mad Men marathon left us wanting to try a girly, sexy secretary look along the lines of Joan Holloway, the secretary to end all secretaries. We love the idea of any of these blouses with the slimmest of pencil skirts and a killer stiletto, but we are also into throwing on one of them with a well-worn jean and a beaten-up motorcycle boot. Which one is your favorite?

Model Moment: Katoucha Niane 1960-2008

29 Jul

We talk about how much we love certain models all the time on The Black Market, but there are a scarce few that we were as obsessed with as Guinean/French model Katoucha Niane. One of THE supermodels of the 80’s, Niane was muse to Yves Saint Laurent and had one of the most breathtakingly gorgeous faces (and bodies) to ever grace a runway or magazine. Her shocking death in 2008 by accidental drowning was deeply heartbreaking to those who followed her career. Here are some of our favorite images of her as well as a silent video tribute to her.

The Industry: Yves Saint Laurent On His Love of Black Models

22 Jul

We love, love our cadre of fashionphile friends! One of them just sent us this amazing little video clip of Yves Saint Laurent, talking about his affinity for black models. We had to share it.  As you most likely already know, YSL was the first of the major couturiers to have black models walk in his shows and presentations. The legacy that Saint Laurent leaves behind is long and deep, but it is in this area that has cemented his place in our hearts.
